How to Create GIF Animated Rain in Photoshop (Any Version) - with Video Tutorial

If you have come across the title of the post, you have understood that today I will be guiding you on how to create a GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) animation in Adobe Photoshop. Creating GIF with Photoshop is easy but I have created this tutorial for Newbie. And of course, you must have known what GIF image is and what is used for.

So, I should be directly jumping into the tutorial step by step rather than elaborating all those questions.

What we need before starting

  1. Find out a rainy day model image with Umbrella or without
  2. And defiantly Adobe Photoshop (Any Version)
Note: The image I have used in this tutorial is taken from Silana Solii on Pinterest under fair use of Creative Commons.

At first, open the image you have selected with Photoshop. Then create a “New Layer” by holding all together Ctrl+Shift+N (Shortcut Key) or see the image below

After you have created a new layer, name it “Rain Effect” or put anything you want.

Now go to “File” being “Rain Effect” layer selected and select “Fill”. Once you select it, you will see the fill window appears. Now change the contents to “Black”, Mode to Normal and Opacity to 100%. And click Ok. (Follow the image below)

Once you are done. You model image will be covered by black colour. I mean that “Rain Effect” layer becomes completely black.

Now we need to add “Noise” to the “Rain Effect” layer. So, before adding noise, be sure “Rain Effect” layer is selected.

For adding “Noise” Go to the Filter > Noise > Add Noise (Please see the instruction on the below image)

After selecting “Add Noise” a popup will be appeared and put the amount at 53 something I did (considering your image resolution) and then be sure of “Gaussian and Monochromatic” being selected. Checkmark on “Preview” to see instant change how it looks.

Play with the amount until you get satisfied. (See the reference image below)

Once you are done so far. Finally, click on Ok.

On this step, you are going to add “Gaussian Blur” on the same “Rain Effect” layer. For adding Gaussian Blur follow the same instruction as we followed the last step of adding Noise. See the image below as a guide.

Once you select the “Gaussian Blur” a popup will be appeared to ask you to input the Radius value. So, input the amount 1.0 Pixels (according to your image resolution) as I did. But you can play with the Radius amount.

For being sure, see the below image. And remember to check mark on “Preview” to see the change.

After satisfying the amount yourself then click on Ok.

Now we are going to add “Motion Blur” on the same “Rain Effect” layer. Therefore, Go to the Filter > Blur > Motion Blur

After you are done. It will be pop up and put the amount of the Angle of Rain Drop in which angle you like to fall the rain.

And input the amount of Distance of Rain Drops between each other. It completely depends on your choice. Play more with the value as long as you get fixed with. See the image help below.

Once you are satisfied with the amount then click on Ok.

Now Go to the layer mode and change “Normal” to “Screen”. See the image below

After changing it to “Screen” you will see model image gets changed something like foggy rainy flowing around the image area.

Now we are almost done. We only have the animation left. So, here we go!

Before going to start GIF animation we need to do Free Transform “Rain Effect” Layer and then we will scale it up according to the way of rain angle you like. For more details follow me. So, let’s start –

At first, Zoom out by holding Alt Key from Keyboard along with scrolling mouse wheel at the same time. It will give us more space which we need to drag up our model image.

Now for doing the free transformation, we can do by pressing Ctrl+T together from the keyboard or Go to File > Free Transformation. Once you transform the Rain Effect layer, drag the upside of the model image to the up a little bit more because we are going to make raindrop fall down from up. When you are finished then hit the Enter.

For deep details follow the image below.

Well, so far so good. Now we need to animate our image.

For animation, Go to Window > Timeline. Then timeline window appears at the bottom of your screen. Now click on “Create Frame Animation”. See the image below.

Once you select the “Create Frame Animation” you can see look like the below image.

Though we are going to create frame animation, we need to create many frames of our Rain Effect layer on the timeline by keep creating new frame one by one simultaneously dragging the Rain Effect layer. Follow the below image

Once you have finished the last step. Then we have to set the frame time and to set looping option as forever. After setting up everything well, select the play animation. So, follow the below image

We have finished our GIF animation in Adobe Photoshop. Now it’s time to save file into our hard disk. To save the file as GIF, Go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) or Press Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S all together from your Keyboard.

Follow the below image

Finally, click on save.

Conclusion

I have tried to guide you throughout the post with a video demonstration and sharing screenshot. Yes, I know that it sometimes might be quiet boring and difficult to follow up every step. As a result, I have created a video demonstration to make you clear the tutorial.

If you like the tutorial and help you for creating GIF animation in Adobe Photoshop, share it on social media. Next, I will come back with a new tutorial.
Enjoy!
